Listen / Lyrics

"Skillful, crystalline guitar, superb songwriting and soulful, harmonious vocals characterize this acoustic masterpiece. Bev Barnett and Greg Newlon have touched all the bases here. Bev has a voice that soars to great heights with outstanding range and command, while Greg has a sturdy, powerful voice that connects with everyone who listens. Together they create beautiful harmonies with more than a touch of sweetness."

-- David Stafford, KKUP 91.5 FM

Any Doorway Will Do is a collection of songs about life, love, and the pursuit of something real. The listener joins these two songwriters on a journey through doorways of words and music as they chronicle lives filled with joy, marked with sorrow and illuminated by hope. Clearly, there is a wealth of life experience in their words and melodies that can be felt as much as heard. The album title comes from Roll with the Punches, the couple's anthem for living life one day at a time:

"… and if it's raining, any doorway will do...
You've got to roll with the punches
You've got to keep your eye on a star
You've got to dream like there's no tomorrow
You've got to be just who you are …"

Eight of the 12 tracks on Any Doorway Will Do were co-written by the couple with the remaining four penned individually, providing further insights into each writer. Their individual styles are a unique complement to each other both vocally and from a songwriting perspective.

Greg maps a quest for knowledge and humility on "Revelation Isle," with the lines, "I know I am unworthy / a pauper at your door."  In "Now is What We are," Bev presents a case for staying present, with the sage advice "just take the gifts that have been left here at your feet / and look with love on every stranger that you meet / 'cause now is what we are."

Bev Barnett & Greg Newlon are troubadours on a new frontier, baby boomers who grew up on great music and now create it to share with a growing audience of similar souls; the generation with a wealth of life experience whose search continues.

Acoustic, contemporary, meaningful and uplifting - and with as many questions as answers - Any Doorway Will Do offers shelter and solace to seekers and skeptics alike.

the miracle

bb/gn

inspired by the rev. steve wilde and the rev. dr. isaiah jones (see… we were listening)

think of every shadow as a chance to start again

think of every heartache as a chance to make amends

gather all the miracles you find along the way

put them in your pocket ‘cause one day

you’ll know when the thunder rolls you won’t have to hide

lightning rarely strikes you twice, it falls on either side

when you’re on the edge of knowing who you’re gonna be

just reach into your pocket and you’ll see

you’re the miracle

if you can see the silver lining

in the eye of a hurricane

if you can say you feel like flying

when it looks like rain

then you can

follow every winding path until you see the light

follow every dream to turn the wrong back into right

no more walking sightless when you hold the hand of God

when your heart is open, then you are

the miracle

lover’s story

bb/gn

moonlight walks and satin sheets, waking up at dawn

breathe the scent of pillows that your lover slept upon

ride the wave of electricity and feel it grow

that’s the way the lover’s story goes

raindrops on a summer’s eve, sand between your toes

double rainbow, east to west, the perfume of a rose

but rain will turn to storm and waves will crash against the shore

and soon enough, their love will be no more

from the lips that kissed the accusations fall like stone

that’s the way the lover’s story goes

broken glass and promises scattered on the ground

dreams of their forever, lost, never to be found

will dreams go on and can the broken places ever mend?

so lover’s can be free to love again

to fly on light and dream-filled nights that that only two can know

that’s the way the lover’s story goes

revelation isle

gn

it seems i'm always asking questions about the paths i find

presented to me for a moment then removed before their time

there is something i have wondered and i've wondered a long time

when i finally find the truth why am i blind?

we all strip away the secrets, never knowing what we'll find

it becomes a revelation, it can come from either side

when i think about that moment its a moment caught in time

as we watch the battle between heart and mind

my heart's there in your eyes, i think you know

now there are no lies to ebb the flow

i know i am unworthy, a pauper at your door

my heart's there in your eyes wanting you so

i could have tried by a deception but deceptions rarely hold

i tried to beat down that connection but your image just won’t go

so i gave up all foolish fighting, had the strength to fight no more

you removed the walls and opened up the door

now i cannot predict the future can’t control the past

and it has been my observation that for me the good won't last

but when i feel you all around me, when i hear you whisper low

in all those things i want here you are so much more

my heart's there in your eyes i think you know

now there are no lies to ebb the flow

i know i am unworthy a pauper at your door

my heart's there in your eyes wanting you so

my heart's there in your eyes, I know you know

time

bb/gn

in the dark shed there’s a box she hasn’t seen in years

in younger days she’d sit for hours, clay-stained hands upon the wheel

hearing music all around her she would throw the day away

tracing patterns as she took the notes and placed them in the clay

time moved on, and with it went the wheel

there was so much to be done

behind a broken clock he sees familiar rosewood through the dark

remembers how he used to write the songs and sing them from his heart

in younger days he had the time to play, he’d make the music flow

on the way to growing up i guess that something had to go

time played on, and with it went the songs

there was so much to be done

time steals on, don’t let it take your dreams

it was a sunny afternoon the kids were playing down the street

up in the attic, he picked up that guitar and made it weep in the backyard he could see her

she was sitting at the wheel

he made the music as she worked the clay

and time stood still

I believe in you and me

bb/gn

sometimes i think that it’s just me

sometimes i blame it all on the things that you can’t be

and sometimes

i think we lose the forest among all these trees

sometimes the sun beats down too strong

sometimes i just can’t hide my feelings in a song

and sometimes

i wish we could forget

who is right and who is wrong

but every river stretches out to find the calmer sea and

when the rain comes down i know you’ll always dance with me and

through the forest we will find our way among these trees and baby

i believe in you and me

sometimes i’m not sure where we’ll land

sometimes this world comes crashing in on best laid plans

and sometimes

we have to take a chance while we still can

and every river stretches out to find the calmer sea and

when the rain comes down i know you’ll always dance with me and

through the forest we will find our way among these trees and baby

i believe in you and me

roll with the punches

gn

there really was a swing in the backyard of a house in birmingham, michigan - the song was “i’ve been workin’ on the railroad”

when i was young the summer skies were blue

there wasn’t too much that i had to do

i was a dreamer, maybe you were too

we had a swing that i’d ride all day long

i’d fly around the world and sing my song

to anyone, it was all i could do

i would just roll with the punches

i would just keep my eye on a star

i would just dream like there’s no tomorrow

i couldn’t see down the road this far

then i grew up as we all seem to do

i had some winners and some losers too

seems like the losers were more than a few

i finally realized that what we seek

is right inside us if you take a peek

you’ll remember just what you can do

you’ve got to roll with the punches

you’ve got to keep your eye on a star

you’ve got to dream like there’s no tomorrow

you’ve got to be just who you are

now every morning I wake up and see

if those old dark clouds are there trailin’ me

it doesn’t matter, bring ‘em on through

just keep your eyes upon the road ahead

and keep that song you’ve got inside your head

and if its raining, any doorway will do

you’ve got to roll with the punches

you’ve got to keep your eye on a star

you’ve got to dream like there’s no tomorrow

you’ve got to be just who you are

swim

bb/gn

swim into my eyes and breathe me like the air

speak to me with silken threads that barely hold me there

they say the night’s for lovers, so love me now

we’ll fall into the depths where light remains somehow

dive into my dreams and kiss me while i sleep

calm the storm inside of me and pray my soul to keep

they say the night’s for lovers, so love me now

we’ll fall into the depths where light remains somehow

take me to the zoo

bb/gn

will you take me to the zoo to see the elephants?

will you paint my canvas blue with shades of sweet romance?

and when i feel the ocean breeze cold against my skin

i feel your touch and your heart makes me warm again

will you walk with me along the morning shore

let the sunrise see we’re wanting so much more

will you take my hand as we face the dawn

hearts are weak but love is strong

your touch

so much of me is waiting, is wanting

from a light in the shadow i hear the wind whisper your name

your touch

so much of me is waiting, is wanting

and if wanting is knowing then i know way too much

will you always know no matter what we face

that i will never really go, in our hearts there is a place

the light will never fade though the nights are long

hearts are weak but our love is strong

will you remember me when memories fade from view

wherever i will be i won’t be far from you

and when i feel the ocean breeze cold against my skin

i feel your touch and your heart makes me warm again

your touch

so much of me is waiting, is wanting

from a light in the shadow i hear the wind whisper your name

your touch

so much of me is waiting, is wanting

and if wanting is knowing then i know way too much

it just flows

bb/gn

thanks to jan garrett and jd martin for the view off their deck

see the river, hear it go

over rocks through a field of snow

I know, it just flows

see the wind, hear the trees

wind that touches every leaf

i know, it just flows

it just flows

a song you’ve always known

it just flows

you’ll never sing alone

it just flows

just like the river, flowing free

out of you and into me

i know, it just flows

just like the wind, just like the leaves

we’re all branches on that same old tree

i know, it just flows

high the mountain, low the sea

living water flowing in between

hear the river, see it run

from the well out through everyone

i know, it just flows

when the evening comes

bb

when the evening comes and the shadows start to fall

when there’s no one left but you and your back’s against the wall

the little voice inside refuses to be still

you waken from a dream and your skin begins to chill

when the evening comes

when the morning comes and you’re blinded by the light

you can try to push away the demons of the night

but the mirror shows you more than you can hide

now you’re pushing down the ghosts you’ve kept inside

there’s a voice inside your head you can listen if you dare

or does it burn your fragile senses ‘till you’re numb and unaware

will you hide your head in the sand or will you stand up in the sun

when the answers come like a thief in the night will you see how fast you can run?

when the answers come

when the evening comes and the truth is closing in

when you know that giving up is the only way to win

you’ll be strong enough to choose your sacred path

and you’ll be ready to survive the aftermath

when the evening comes

eloise

bb/gn

all the leaves are coming green

blossoms falling from the trees

its spring, eloise

every sunday afternoon

i come and get you from you room

comb your hair, and wheel your chair

out of the gloom

you tell me how it used to be

back in 1943

before the letter came and told you

that he’s never coming home

you worked the counter every day

and he’d come in at lunch and say

eloise you’re pretty as a picture

and i’ll be back before you know

her story always stays the same

today I think she knows my name

eloise, i’m glad i came

keeps my mind from my own fears

keeps my eyes from my own tears

now and then, i’ve wondered when

i would hear

today the letter came for me

i couldn’t look, i left it sealed

now its time to face the fact

that he is never coming home

i know in 1943

she felt the bullet just like me

how she’s made it all these years with this

i swear i’ll never know

eloise, eloise

all the leaves are coming green

blossoms falling from the trees

its spring, eloise

now is what we are

bb

we’re always looking down the road that lies ahead

tomorrow’s fears are spinning ‘round inside our heads

what’ if all our thoughts could change the world instead?

we question wisdom in the grand design

join the search for any meaning we can find

trouble is that we’re all looking for a sign

when now is what we are

just know the world is spinning safely at your feet

show up and vow to be right here until you leave

no moment, past or future could ever be so sweet

‘cause now is what we are

now is what we are

instead of opening every door to find relief

just take the gifts that have been left here at your feet

and look with love on every stranger that you meet

‘cause now is what we are

now is what we are
